Brian inspired me to change my attitude towards government. Before I began to know Brian Cabena, I often criticized the government, but never did anything about what the government was doing. Being interested in electronics, I was happy to be a member his team constructing their FM broadcasting station in 1975 As I worked on the project, I learned a little about how Brian and a few other people had created enough community pressure on the government that they overturned the government FM broadcasting policy. I was so grateful that my grandmother, Julie Harbison, was able to enjoy hours of listening to the classical music that she loved to hear, thanks to Brian Cabena and other members of the Music Broadcasting Society. It was not an easy road for Brian to achieve that outcome. There were almost endless delays and frustrations. Many government officials and some members of parliament were unwilling to consider any changes to government policy. Some commercial interests were determined that Brian and his friends would not get their own way. Yet Brian was unstoppable. I remember the urgency to get the transmitter completed. It seemed as if Brian had not expected the Music Broadcasting Society to get their FM broadcasting licence so soon, as he had not already equipped the station to begin broadcasts. I also remember one chilly evening up the antenna tower in Kew, making adjustments up there as Brian and a few others remained in the warmth of the studio in front of their test instruments giving me instructions through the intercom system.
