Telephone installation and service.
I found two telephone linesmen did the best that they could do for me when I moved house. These people are often let down by other sections of their organisation. I was not accurately advised when I rang to organise the move. I was furious when the linesman told me that I would have to wait an extra week or so, would have to ring and organise a contractor to replace the cable from the street to the house, and I would have to pay for that work. ( When I booked the relocation, I asked more than once if there could be a possibility of extra costs. I was told "only if there is extra wiring." I said that all I want is one socket near where the wire comes in, and was told that then there would not be any extra charges. )

The linesman attempted to arrange the work at no cost to me, because of the unusual circumstances. He also attempted to have that line made available again at the old place for a few days until the work was completed and I had finished moving. They would not do that. He diverted the second line to the one line for me.

I dug a trench, and a licensed cabler installed a cable. I then decided that I really wanted my own telephone line and ordered it.

I rang to get the line connected, and was told that I would have to wait a week to get that done. I explained that I had not been correctly informed and requested earlier. I was told that it could not be done earlier. I felt angry as I believed that was not true. I could believe that they chose not to provide quicker service, but the more he insisted that they could not, the angrier I became. I calmed down when he offered me about $50 off my next bill to compensate me for my dissatisfaction. I felt supported and was happy to receive some compensation for my frustration, loss of time and extra expense.

A week later,  as promised, the other linesman called, and connected all 3 lines. He was courteous, and he checked to ensure that he correctly understood my instructions. He replaced the old terminations in the street to ensure a reliable service, and confidently spoke to the neighbour who's telephone service was interrupted while he did this.

Linesmen have to deal with dissatisfied and incorrectly advised customers, incorrectly labeled cables, changing rules and responsibilities, old cables and terminations, water leakage and other difficulties. Maybe my work isn't so difficult by comparison.
